Tennessee Onions are a Southern comfort food classic made by layering sweet Vidalia onions with a mix of cheeses and seasoning, then baking until bubbly and golden. It’s an easy, flavorful side dish that turns basic onions into something special.
Ingredients

3-4 large sweet onions (like Vidalia), sliced into 1/4-inch rounds

1 tbsp olive oil or melted butter (for greasing the dish)

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp onion powder

1/4 tsp black pepper

1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional)

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or olive oil.

Peel and slice onions into rings. Separate the rings and spread evenly in the baking dish.

Sprinkle garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and paprika evenly over the onions.

Combine all shredded cheeses in a bowl. Sprinkle the cheese mixture evenly over the onions.

Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 10–15 minutes until cheese is golden and bubbly.

Let rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
Notes
Add a splash of heavy cream or a few pats of butter over the onions for extra richness.
Can be made ahead and reheated—just cover and warm in the oven.
Try adding cooked bacon bits or a pinch of cayenne for a spicy twist.
