Description

This one-pan steak and cheese skillet is a hearty, flavor-packed dish featuring seared steak, sautéed onions and peppers, and melty cheese. It’s perfect for an easy weeknight dinner and can be served on its own, over rice, or stuffed into hoagie rolls for a Philly-style twist!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/2 pounds sirloin or ribeye steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 cup shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese (or 4 slices provolone)

Instructions

  • Prep the Steak:

    • Slice the steak thinly against the grain for tenderness. If needed, place the steak in the freezer for 10–15 minutes before slicing to make it easier.
  • Cook the Steak:

    • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Add the steak, season with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika, and sear for 2–3 minutes per side until browned.
    • Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • Sauté the Veggies:

    • Reduce heat to medium and melt 2 tablespoons butter in the same skillet.
    • Add the onion, bell peppers, and garlic, cooking for 5 minutes until softened.
    • Stir in the Worcestershire sauce for extra flavor.
  • Melt the Cheese:

    • Return the steak to the skillet, mixing it with the sautéed vegetables.
    • Sprinkle shredded cheese (or lay slices) over the top. Cover with a lid and let the cheese melt for 2 minutes.

  • Serve:

    • Enjoy as is, or serve over rice, mashed potatoes, or in a toasted hoagie roll for a sandwich-style meal.

Notes

  • Best steak choices: Ribeye, sirloin, or flank steak work best for tenderness and flavor.
  • Want it spicy? Add ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce.
  • Cheese options: Provolone is classic, but mozzarella, white American, or cheddar work too!

  • Make it keto: Skip the bread and serve over cauliflower rice or zucchini noodles.
