Description

This simple yet flavorful side dish features crisp-tender roasted green beans paired with sweet, buttery caramelized onions. It’s perfect for holiday meals or an easy weeknight dinner!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon balsamic vinegar (optional, for extra depth)
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • 1/4 cup toasted almonds or Parmesan cheese (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Caramelize the Onions:
  • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
  • Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until golden and caramelized.
  • Stir in balsamic vinegar (if using) and set aside.
  • Roast the Green Beans:
  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Toss green beans with 1 tablespoon olive oil, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  • Spread in an even layer and roast for 12-15 minutes until tender and slightly crispy.
  • Combine & Serve:
  • Toss roasted green beans with caramelized onions and transfer to a serving dish.
  • Garnish with toasted almonds or Parmesan cheese if desired.
  • Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • For extra crunch: Add crispy bacon or panko breadcrumbs.
  • Make ahead: Caramelize the onions in advance and store them in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Swap it up: Use shallots instead of onions for a milder sweetness.
