Ingredients

Units Scale
For the Dough:
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup whole milk (warm)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Filling:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
  • 4 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 12 tbsp milk (if needed, for consistency)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, mix warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.

  • Add melted butter, egg, vanilla, and red food coloring. Stir to combine.

  • In a separate bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually add to the wet mixture, kneading until a soft dough forms.

  • Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  • Make the Filling: Mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a small bowl.

  • Roll out the dough into a 12×16-inch rectangle on a floured surface. Spread softened butter over the dough and sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly.

  • Roll and Cut: Roll the dough tightly from the long edge. Cut into 10–12 equal rolls. Place in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.

  • Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake rolls for 20–25 minutes until lightly golden.

  • Make the Frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add powdered sugar and vanilla. Mix until creamy. Add milk if needed.

  • Serve: Spread frosting over warm rolls and enjoy!

Notes

  • For extra richness, drizzle melted white chocolate on top.
  • To make ahead, refrigerate overnight before baking.
