Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Red Velvet Cake:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet or a large rectangular pan with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
    • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
    • In another bowl, combine the oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
    • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth and well combined.
    • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
    • Bake for 20–25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely.
  2. Make the Cream Cheese Frosting:
    • In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter until creamy and smooth.
    • Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until light and fluffy.
    • Mix in the vanilla extract.
  3. Assemble the Jars:
    • Use a round cookie cutter (sized to fit your jars) to cut out cake circles.
    • Place one cake layer at the bottom of each jar.
    • Add a layer of cream cheese frosting using a piping bag or spoon.
    • Repeat the layers until the jar is full, ending with a swirl of frosting on top.
    • Garnish with cake crumbs, sprinkles, or a dusting of cocoa powder if desired.
    • Seal the jars with lids if gifting or storing.

Notes

  • You can make the cake a day ahead and assemble the jars when ready to serve.
  • Store the jars in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Let them sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving.
  • For a fun twist, add mini chocolate chips or fresh berries between layers.
