Description
Spritz cookies are delicate, buttery cookies that are lightly sweet and have a crisp texture. They’re made with a cookie press to create festive shapes and are often decorated with sprinkles or a drizzle of chocolate. This is a timeless recipe that’s been a holiday favorite for generations!
Ingredients
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional, but adds great flavor)
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
For Decorating (Optional):
- Colored sprinkles or sanding sugar
- Melted chocolate for drizzling
Instructions
Preheat Oven & Prepare Baking Sheet:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or use an ungreased sheet (spritz cookies bake better this way).
Make the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 2 minutes).
Add egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, mixing until smooth.
Gradually add flour and salt, mixing just until combined.
Shape the Cookies:
Load the dough into a cookie press fitted with your favorite disc shape.
Press cookies directly onto the ungreased baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
Decorate with colored sprinkles or sanding sugar before baking if desired.
Bake the Cookies:
Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
Optional Decorations:
Once cooled, drizzle with melted chocolate or dip half of each cookie into chocolate for an extra treat!
Notes
No Cookie Press? Roll the dough into small balls and flatten slightly with a fork or a decorative stamp.
Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or freeze for up to 3 months.
Flavor Variations: Swap almond extract for lemon, orange, or peppermint extract for a twist.
