Description

A refreshing and flavorful shrimp cocktail made with juicy shrimp, fresh vegetables, and a zesty tomato-based sauce. This classic Mexican dish is perfect as an appetizer or light meal, especially on warm days!

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Shrimp:

  • 1 lb shrimp, peeled, deveined, and cooked
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice

For the Cocktail Sauce:

  • 1 cup tomato juice (such as Clamato or V8)
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce (like Valentina or Tapatío)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Mix-ins:

  • 1/2 cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup cucumber, diced
  • 1 cup tomatoes, diced
  • 1 avocado, diced
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
  • 1 jalapeño, finely diced (optional)

For Serving:

  • Tortilla chips or saltine crackers
  • Lime wedges

Instructions

  • Prepare the Shrimp: In a bowl, season the cooked shrimp with salt, pepper, and lime juice. Let it sit while you prepare the sauce.
  • Make the Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together tomato juice, ketchup, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, lime juice, and salt. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  • Combine Ingredients: Add the shrimp, red onion, cucumber, tomatoes, avocado, cilantro, and jalapeño (if using) into the sauce. Stir well to coat everything.
  • Chill: Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors blend.

  • Serve: Spoon into serving cups or bowls, garnish with lime wedges, and serve with tortilla chips or crackers.

Notes

  • For extra freshness, use freshly cooked shrimp instead of pre-cooked shrimp.
  • Adjust the spice level by adding more or less hot sauce and jalapeño.

  • If you prefer a thinner consistency, add more tomato juice.
