Scale
3 large egg whites, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 packet (0.14 oz) unsweetened Kool-Aid powder (any flavor)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Set to 225°F (110°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Whip egg whites: In a clean, dry mixing bowl, beat the egg whites on medium speed until foamy. Add the cream of tartar and continue beating.
- Add sugar: Gradually add the sugar, one tablespoon at a time, while beating. Increase to high speed and beat until stiff, glossy peaks form. This takes about 5-7 minutes.
- Add Kool-Aid & vanilla: Gently fold in the Kool-Aid powder and vanilla (if using) until evenly mixed. The color will brighten as you mix!
- Pipe or scoop: Transfer the meringue mixture to a piping bag with a star tip (or use a spoon) and pipe small mounds onto the lined baking sheet.
- Bake: Place in the oven and bake for 1½ to 2 hours, or until the meringues are dry and crisp. Turn off the oven and let them cool inside for another hour to prevent cracking.
- Enjoy! Once completely cool, store in an airtight container.
Notes
- Best flavors: Cherry, grape, lemonade, and tropical punch work great!
- Make them colorful! Add a drop of food coloring to intensify the hue.
- Storage: Keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Avoid humidity!
