Ingredients

Units Scale
  • :
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or 1/2 tsp dried thyme)
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (plus extra for topping)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • :
  • Caramelize the Onions: Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply golden and jammy (about 25-30 minutes). Stir in balsamic vinegar and thyme; cook for another 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Prepare the Dip Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine sour cream, cream cheese, Gruyère, mozzarella, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir until well mixed.
  • Combine: Fold in the caramelized onions and mix well.
  • Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer mixture to a baking dish, sprinkle with extra Gruyère, and bake for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden brown on top.
  • Serve: Garnish with parsley and serve warm with toasted bread, crackers, or veggies.

Notes

  • :
  • You can prepare the dip in advance and refrigerate before baking.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of red pepper flakes.
