Description
Huli Huli Chicken is a Hawaiian classic featuring juicy grilled chicken marinated in a sweet and tangy sauce made with pineapple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, and ginger. The name “Huli Huli” comes from the Hawaiian word for “turn,” because the chicken is traditionally turned while it cooks over the grill. It’s perfect for a summer BBQ or a tropical-themed dinner!
Ingredients
-
4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs (or chicken breasts)
-
1/2 cup pineapple juice
-
1/4 cup soy sauce
-
1/4 cup brown sugar
-
2 tablespoons ketchup
-
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
-
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
-
2 garlic cloves, minced
-
1 tablespoon sesame oil
-
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
-
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
-
Chopped green onions and sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
Instructions
-
In a medium bowl, whisk together the pineapple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, rice vinegar, ginger, garlic, sesame oil, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper.
-
Place the chicken in a zip-top bag or shallow dish and pour the marinade over the top. Seal and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
-
Preheat grill to medium-high heat.
-
Remove chicken from the marinade and grill for 5-7 minutes per side, or until internal temperature reaches 165°F. Baste occasionally with reserved marinade.
-
Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving.
-
Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds if desired.
Notes
-
For the most flavor, marinate the chicken overnight.
-
If using bone-in chicken, adjust cooking time accordingly.
-
You can also bake this chicken at 400°F for 25–30 minutes if you don’t have a grill.
