Description

This soft, buttery, and slightly sweet French toast made with Hawaiian rolls is the perfect breakfast treat! The rolls soak up the rich, vanilla-cinnamon custard beautifully, making them crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Serve with syrup, fresh fruit, or a dusting of powdered sugar for a delicious start to your day!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 package Hawaiian sweet rolls (12 rolls)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (or half-and-half for extra richness)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter, for cooking
  • Maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit for topping

Instructions

  • Prepare the Custard:
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sugar, and salt until smooth.
  • Dip the Rolls:
    • Separate the Hawaiian rolls but keep them intact for a pull-apart style, or slice them individually for more crisp edges.
    • Dip each roll (or the whole block) into the custard, letting them soak for 5-10 seconds on each side.
  • Cook the French Toast:
    • Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Add the soaked Hawaiian rolls and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
  • Serve Warm:
    • Dust with powdered sugar, drizzle with maple syrup, or top with fresh berries and whipped cream. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Want it extra fluffy? Let the rolls soak in the custard for 10 minutes before cooking.
  • For a caramelized touch: Sprinkle a little brown sugar on the rolls before cooking.
  • Make it tropical: Add a splash of coconut milk and top with toasted coconut flakes!
