- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 ½ cups buttermilk (or 1 ½ cups milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup diced cooked ham
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
- ½ tsp black pepper (optional)
- 2 tbsp chopped chives or green onions (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Pour the melted butter into an 8×8-inch baking dish.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper.
- Add wet ingredients: Pour in the buttermilk and stir until just combined (don’t overmix). Fold in the diced ham, shredded cheese, and chives (if using).
- Bake: Spread the dough evenly over the melted butter in the baking dish. Use a knife to score the dough into 9 squares before baking.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown on top and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Serve & enjoy! Let cool for a few minutes, then cut and serve warm.
Notes
Swap cheddar for Swiss or pepper jack for a different flavor.
