Description
Grilled mackerel is a fast, flavorful, and heart-healthy dish that’s loaded with omega-3s and natural smoky flavor. With crispy skin and tender, juicy meat, this recipe lets the fish shine with just a few basic ingredients. It’s perfect for weeknight dinners or summer cookouts.
Ingredients
-
2 whole mackerel, cleaned and gutted (about 1-1.5 lbs each)
-
2 tbsp olive oil
-
1 lemon, sliced
-
2 garlic cloves, minced
-
1 tsp salt
-
1/2 tsp black pepper
-
Fresh herbs (like parsley or dill), for garnish
-
Optional: extra lemon wedges for serving
Instructions
-
Prep the fish: Rinse the mackerel under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Score the skin with 2–3 shallow cuts on each side.
-
Season: In a small bowl, mix olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper. Rub the mixture all over the fish, including inside the cavity.
-
Stuff: Place a few lemon slices inside each fish for added flavor.
-
Grill: Preheat grill to medium-high and lightly oil the grates. Place the fish directly on the grill or in a grill basket.
-
Cook: Grill for 4–5 minutes per side, or until the skin is crispy and the flesh flakes easily with a fork.
-
Serve: Remove from grill, garnish with fresh herbs, and serve with extra lemon wedges.
Notes
-
Grilling baskets help keep the fish intact and make flipping easier.
-
You can also use mackerel fillets—grill skin-side down for 3–4 minutes, then flip for 1–2 minutes.
-
Add a touch of chili flakes or smoked paprika for extra kick.
