Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • Sliced green onions (for garnish)

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, water, honey, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Set aside.
  • Heat a large pan over medium heat. Add the chicken pieces and cook for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and cooked through.
  • Pour the teriyaki sauce mixture over the chicken in the pan.
  • Let the sauce simmer for 2-3 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly. If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix 1 tbsp of cornstarch with 2 tbsp of water, then stir it into the sauce and simmer for another minute until thickened.
  • Remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions.
  • Serve the teriyaki chicken over rice or alongside steamed vegetables.

Notes

  • You can substitute chicken breasts with thighs for a juicier texture.
  • Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce if you like a bit of heat.
  • This sauce can also be used for other proteins like beef, pork, or tofu.
