Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (if needed)
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder (optional, for a little spice)
  • 1/2 cup water or beef broth (for extra sauciness)
  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. Cook the Beef:

    • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until browned (about 5-7 minutes).
    • If using lean beef, add 1 tablespoon olive oil to prevent sticking.
    • Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Sauté the Vegetables:

    • Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet.
    • Cook for 3-4 minutes, until softened and fragrant.
  3. Make the Sauce:

    • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and chili powder (if using).
    • Pour in the water or beef broth and stir to combine.
  4. Simmer & Thicken:

    • Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  5. Assemble & Serve:

    • Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto toasted hamburger buns.
    • Serve hot with your favorite sides!

Notes

  • For a healthier version, use ground turkey or chicken.
  • Add a dash of hot sauce for extra heat.
  • Make it ahead! The flavors develop even more if made a day in advance.
