Description

This Easy Creamed Hamburger Gravy is a simple, hearty dish made with ground beef in a rich, creamy sauce. It comes together in minutes and is perfect served over mashed potatoes, biscuits, rice, or toast. It’s a budget-friendly classic that brings cozy, home-cooked flavor to the table!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 cup beef broth (optional for extra flavor)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Cook the Beef: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until browned and crumbled. Drain excess grease if needed.
  • Sauté the Aromatics: Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
  • Make the Roux: Push the beef to the side of the skillet and melt the butter in the center. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk for 1-2 minutes to cook off the raw flour taste.
  • Add Liquids: Gradually whisk in the milk and beef broth (if using), stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
  • Simmer & Thicken: Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring often, until the gravy thickens to your liking.
  • Season: Stir in Worcestershire sauce (if using), salt, and pepper to taste. Adjust seasoning as needed.
  • Serve: Spoon the creamy hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes, biscuits, rice, or toast. Garnish with a sprinkle of dried herbs, if desired.

Notes

  • You can use half-and-half for a richer gravy or swap in heavy cream for extra indulgence.
  • For a lighter version, substitute milk with unsweetened almond milk or a plant-based alternative.
  • Add a dash of hot sauce or cayenne for a little kick!
