Units
Scale
- 1 lb ribeye steak, thinly sliced (or sirloin as a budget-friendly option)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 4 slices provolone cheese (or Cheese Whiz for an authentic Philly taste)
- 2 hoagie rolls, sliced open
- 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting rolls)
Instructions
- Prepare the Steak: Freeze the steak for about 30 minutes to make slicing easier. Then, slice it as thinly as possible.
- Sauté the Onions: Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until soft and golden, about 5 minutes. Remove and set aside.
- Cook the Steak: In the same pan, add the sliced steak. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook for 3–4 minutes, stirring frequently, until browned.
- Melt the Cheese: Lower the heat, return the onions to the pan, and place cheese slices over the steak. Cover with a lid for 30 seconds to melt.
- Toast the Rolls: Spread butter on the hoagie rolls and lightly toast them in a separate pan or under a broiler.
- Assemble: Spoon the cheesy steak and onions into the toasted hoagie rolls. Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
- Best Cheese Options: Provolone, Cheese Whiz, or American cheese.
- Meat Alternatives: Sirloin or even shaved deli roast beef for a quick version.
- Add-Ons: Some versions include green bell peppers or mushrooms, but a true Philly classic keeps it simple.
