Description

This Classic Philly Cheesesteak is a simple and delicious sandwich loaded with thinly sliced beef, melted cheese, and sautéed onions on a soft hoagie roll. It’s an easy-to-make version of the iconic Philadelphia favorite that’s perfect for a quick lunch or dinner!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ribeye steak, thinly sliced (or sirloin as a budget-friendly option)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or Cheese Whiz for an authentic Philly taste)
  • 2 hoagie rolls, sliced open
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting rolls)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Steak: Freeze the steak for about 30 minutes to make slicing easier. Then, slice it as thinly as possible.
  2. Sauté the Onions: Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until soft and golden, about 5 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  3. Cook the Steak: In the same pan, add the sliced steak. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook for 3–4 minutes, stirring frequently, until browned.
  4. Melt the Cheese: Lower the heat, return the onions to the pan, and place cheese slices over the steak. Cover with a lid for 30 seconds to melt.
  5. Toast the Rolls: Spread butter on the hoagie rolls and lightly toast them in a separate pan or under a broiler.
  6. Assemble: Spoon the cheesy steak and onions into the toasted hoagie rolls. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • Best Cheese Options: Provolone, Cheese Whiz, or American cheese.
  • Meat Alternatives: Sirloin or even shaved deli roast beef for a quick version.
  • Add-Ons: Some versions include green bell peppers or mushrooms, but a true Philly classic keeps it simple.
