For the Pie:
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
- 6 cups (about 6 medium) apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji work best)
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup (55g) brown sugar, packed
- 2 tbsp (16g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
For the Crumb Topping:
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (63g) all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
Instructions
Preheat & Prepare the Crust
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Place the unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish.
2. Make the Apple Filling
- In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and lemon juice.
3. Make the Crumb Topping
- In a small bowl, mix sugar and flour. Cut in cold butter using a fork or pastry cutter until crumbly.
4. Assemble the Pie
- Pour apple mixture into the pie crust.
- Evenly sprinkle the crumb topping over the apples.
5. Bake in a Brown Paper Bag
- Place the pie inside a large brown paper grocery bag and fold the opening shut. Staple or paperclip it closed.
- Place the bagged pie on a baking sheet and bake for 1 hour.
- After 1 hour, carefully remove the pie from the bag (watch out for steam!) and let it cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
- The brown bag traps steam, baking the pie evenly while keeping the crust crispy!
- No paper bag? Loosely cover the pie with foil instead.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for the ultimate treat!
