Description

Crispy Funnel Cake Sticks are a delightful twist on the classic fairground treat, offering the same sweet, crispy goodness in a convenient, dippable form. These golden sticks are perfect for sharing and make for a fun dessert option at any gathering.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  • Prepare the Batter:

    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
    • In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, then add the milk and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.
    • Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
  • Heat the Oil:

    • Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a heavy-bottomed pot or deep skillet.
    • Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C). Using a thermometer is recommended to maintain the correct temperature.
  • Fry the Batter:

    • Transfer the batter into a squeeze bottle or piping bag fitted with a large round tip.
    • Carefully pipe 4-5 inch strips of batter directly into the hot oil, frying a few at a time to avoid overcrowding.
    • Fry each strip for about 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
    • Use a slotted spoon to remove the funnel cake sticks from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Serve:

    • While still warm, dust the funnel cake sticks generously with powdered sugar.
    • Serve immediately with your choice of dipping sauces, such as chocolate sauce, caramel, or fruit preserves.

Notes

  • Consistency of the Batter: The batter should be smooth and pourable, similar to pancake batter. If it’s too thick, add a little more milk; if too thin, add a bit more flour.
  • Oil Temperature: Maintaining the oil at the correct temperature is crucial. If the oil is too hot, the sticks may burn; if too cool, they can become greasy.
  • Serving Suggestions: These funnel cake sticks are best enjoyed fresh and warm. They pair well with various dipping sauces or can be enjoyed on their own with a simple dusting of powdered sugar.
