Description

Cheesy Onion Focaccia Bread is a delightful Italian flatbread topped with caramelized onions and melted cheese, offering a perfect blend of savory flavors and a soft, airy texture.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Dough:

  • 1 cup warm water (110°F-115°F)
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

For the Topping:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 3 large yellow onions, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1 cup shredded white cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, mix the yeast, warm water, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
    • In a separate bowl, combine olive oil, minced garlic, and half of the kosher salt. Pour half of this mixture into the yeast mixture.
    • Add the flour and stir until a dough forms. Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Caramelize the Onions:
    • While the dough is rising, heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sugar. Cook, stirring often, for about 20 minutes until the onions are soft and golden brown.
  • Assemble the Focaccia:
    • Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C).
    • Pour the remaining garlic oil mixture into a 9×13-inch baking dish, brushing it evenly.
    • Place the risen dough into the dish, stretching it to fit the pan. Use your fingers to create dimples across the surface.
    • Sprinkle the top with the remaining salt, shredded cheese, and caramelized onions.
  • Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until the focaccia is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
    • Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

  • For a different flavor, try using red onions or adding fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme to the topping.
  • This bread pairs well with soups and salads, making it a versatile addition to any meal.
