Description

These homemade yeast dinner rolls are soft, fluffy, and perfectly buttery. They’re easy to make and perfect for any meal, from holiday feasts to everyday dinners!

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more if needed)

  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted (plus more for brushing)

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  • Make the dough: In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.

  • Knead: Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic (or knead in a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-6 minutes).

  • First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  • Shape the rolls: Punch down the dough and divide it into 12-15 equal pieces. Shape into smooth balls and place them in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.

  • Second rise: Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes, until puffy.

  • Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown.

  • Butter & serve: Brush warm rolls with melted butter and enjoy!

Notes

  • For extra buttery rolls, brush with melted butter before AND after baking.

  • If using instant yeast, you can skip the activation step and mix the yeast directly with the flour.

  • Store at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
