Ingredients

Units Scale
  • For the Onion Petals:
  • 1 large sweet onion (Vidalia or Walla Walla)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch (makes them extra crispy)
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • For the Dipping Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp horseradish
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  • 1. Prepare the Onion Petals:
  • Peel and cut the onion into large petals. Separate them gently.
  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and black pepper.
  • In another bowl, whisk buttermilk and egg until smooth.
  • 2. Coat the Onion Petals:
  • 4. Dip each onion petal into the buttermilk mixture, then dredge in the flour mixture.
  • 5. Repeat the process for extra crispiness (double coating).
  • 3. Fry the Onion Petals:
  • 6. Heat oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  • 7. Fry the petals in batches for 2-3 minutes, until golden brown and crispy.
  • 8. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  • 4. Make the Dipping Sauce:
  • 9. In a small bowl, mix all sauce ingredients until well combined.
  • 10. Serve alongside the crispy onion petals. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, chill the battered petals for 10 minutes before frying.
  • No buttermilk? Use 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice as a substitute.
  • Air Fryer Option: Spray battered petals with oil and air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 8-10 minutes, shaking halfway through.
