- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornstarch (makes them extra crispy)
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 egg
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- For the Dipping Sauce:
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp horseradish
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
- 1. Prepare the Onion Petals:
- Peel and cut the onion into large petals. Separate them gently.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and black pepper.
- In another bowl, whisk buttermilk and egg until smooth.
- 2. Coat the Onion Petals:
- 4. Dip each onion petal into the buttermilk mixture, then dredge in the flour mixture.
- 5. Repeat the process for extra crispiness (double coating).
- 3. Fry the Onion Petals:
- 6. Heat oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- 7. Fry the petals in batches for 2-3 minutes, until golden brown and crispy.
- 8. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

Notes
- For extra crispiness, chill the battered petals for 10 minutes before frying.
- No buttermilk? Use 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice as a substitute.
- Air Fryer Option: Spray battered petals with oil and air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 8-10 minutes, shaking halfway through.
