Description

A creamy and smooth frosting that’s perfect for decorating sugar cookies. It sets beautifully but stays soft when you bite into it!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk (more as needed)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or almond extract for extra flavor)
  • 1 pinch salt

  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until smooth and creamy.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating well after each addition.
  • Mix in the vanilla extract (or almond extract), salt, and milk. Start with 2 tablespoons of milk and add more if needed to reach your desired consistency.
  • Continue beating until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
  • If using food coloring, divide the frosting into separate bowls and mix in a few drops of food coloring until fully combined.

  • Spread or pipe onto cooled sugar cookies. Let them sit for about 30 minutes to set before stacking or storing.

Notes

  • For a glossy finish: Add 1 tablespoon of corn syrup.
  • For a thinner glaze-like frosting: Use more milk, about 3-4 tablespoons total.
  • For extra flavor: Try adding a few drops of almond, lemon, or peppermint extract.

  • Storage: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. Re-whip before using.
