- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup green bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
- 1/2 tsp chili powder (optional, for heat)
- 1/2 cup water
- 4 hamburger buns
- 1 tbsp butter (for toasting buns)

- Cook the beef – In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula. Drain excess grease if needed.
- Add veggies – Stir in the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and garlic. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until softened.
- Add sauce ingredients – Pour in the tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, pepper, paprika, and chili powder. Stir well.
- Simmer – Add ½ cup of water, stir, and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes until thickened. Stir occasionally.
- Toast the buns – Spread butter on the buns and lightly toast them in a skillet over medium heat for 1-2 minutes until golden.
- Assemble & serve – Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the toasted buns and serve warm
Notes
- For a leaner version, use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
- Add a splash of hot sauce for extra spice.
- Serve with coleslaw, pickles, or fries for a complete meal.
