Description

A classic Sloppy Joe with rich, tangy, and slightly sweet flavors, made with ground beef, tomato sauce, and seasonings, all piled onto a soft bun.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder (optional, for heat)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 tbsp butter (for toasting buns)

Instructions

Instructions

  • Cook the beef – In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula. Drain excess grease if needed.
  • Add veggies – Stir in the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and garlic. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until softened.
  • Add sauce ingredients – Pour in the tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, pepper, paprika, and chili powder. Stir well.
  • Simmer – Add ½ cup of water, stir, and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes until thickened. Stir occasionally.
  • Toast the buns – Spread butter on the buns and lightly toast them in a skillet over medium heat for 1-2 minutes until golden.
  • Assemble & serve – Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the toasted buns and serve warm

Notes

  • For a leaner version, use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
  • Add a splash of hot sauce for extra spice.
  • Serve with coleslaw, pickles, or fries for a complete meal.
