Description

A warm and comforting breakfast casserole loaded with cinnamon-spiced apples, soft bread, and a sweet custard. Perfect for weekends or holiday mornings!

Ingredients

For the Casserole:
  • 1 loaf French bread (about 10 cups cubed)

  • 3 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and diced

  • 6 large eggs

  • 2 cups whole milk (or half-and-half for extra richness)

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional, for creamier texture)

  • 1/3 cup maple syrup (or brown sugar)

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

  • 1/4 tsp salt

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the bread: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and spread the cubed bread evenly inside.

  • Add the apples: Sprinkle the diced apples over the bread.

  • Make the custard: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream (if using), maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

  • Assemble & soak: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread and apples. Gently press the bread down to soak up the liquid. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight for best results.

  • Make the topping: In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, melted butter, cinnamon, and nuts (if using).

  • Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Sprinkle the topping over the casserole and bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes, until golden brown and set.

  • Serve: Let cool for 5 minutes, then drizzle with extra maple syrup and enjoy!

Notes

  • Best served warm with powdered sugar, maple syrup, or whipped cream.

  • You can prepare this the night before and bake it fresh in the morning.

  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 300°F or microwave in 30-second intervals
